Dear Player, Past Player, Member, Friend and Supporter of WDBC
I thought it would be timely to send a letter giving everyone an update on the club and our plans for 2019/20 and beyond. With the 2019/20 season fast approaching, we are still seeking players as we are aiming to fill senior teams in Div 1, Women’s Div 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7 which is one up from 2018/19, so would appreciate any new players or anyone you might know wanting a game or anyone wishing to return we would love to see you back at the club.
In relation to Junior’s we recently formed a Junior Committee to oversee Junior baseball at Woodville and report to myself and the board. I have been very happy with the progress we are making with Junior development and our vision towards “rebuilding” our junior programmes. Recently the Junior committee met and looked at the upcoming season and we are hoping to have 1 additional team for this year. Gary Owens has been appointed U 17 coach, with Carly Moore again coaching the U13 team this year, Shane Brown U11 and Alex Duerden Pee Wee on Sundays and I personally thank all these fine people for their commitment and volunteering their time to support our club. We are again engaging with Schools for our Friday night Tee Ball programme and hope to build on the around 50 kids we had out last season for Friday nights which was one of the highlights of 2018/19.
The Junior Academy training kicked off on July 29th with thanks to Lawrie Moore for his time in taking the U17 group for their preseason on Wednesday nights. Also Junior and Senior players have started a Pre-season conditioning training with a qualified personal trainer and expert in pre conditioning and we have around 20 players both Senior and Junior attending with the Senators 5023 club committing to payment for the Juniors involved. In the off season we had 12 coaches qualified under Level 2 Baseball SA Coaching accreditation which was a fantastic achievement and great for our future development of the club and great to see some new faces making the commitment to our coaching ranks in any capacity they can.
As you would probably be aware Richard Olson was appointed our Senior Club Coach in May 2019 and Richard has been very active in communicating with players and seeking out past players and future prospects including our Junior players and prospective import player for this year. Senior group training commenced on 29th July and we are very excited to have Richard on board leading our senior group and I am sure with his vision and commitment already shown we should make some good progress.
We still have a vacancy on the board for Club Facilities Manager and Facilities Director following the AGM in June, I would like to thank Noel Watson for applying and being accepted by the Board in the vacant floating board member position, so please feel free to come forward if you would be interested in any of the vacant positions.
Our Women’s team is set to go again for Div 1 in 2019/20 and with goals of finals this year after narrowly missing out last season I’m sure the ladies with the guidance again of coach Todd Dunstall, I’m confident we will definitely get there soon..
After our Div 7 Premiership success of 2018/19 we are aiming to field 3 lower grade teams for Div 5, 6 & 7 on Saturday’s this season with many club stalwarts ready to go around again for another year we are all looking forward to it.
Planning is also underway for the club’s 70th Year Anniversary celebrations planned at this stage for October 2020, so we will keep everyone updated as we go along. Thanks everyone for your ongoing support to the club and I would love to see as many people out in the coming season at the club in any capacity as a player, supporter or volunteer and to those who have left or haven’t dropped by in a while we would love to see you soon.
